Industry

Industrial or Trade effluent is any effluent (liquid waste) that is discharged from any premises being used for carrying on a trade or industry. The effluent needs to be controlled and under many circumstances needs to be treated prior to discharge into either the local water course or the sewer network.

Trade effluent can include:

  Liquid process wastes
  Waste chemicals including oils
  Detergents
  Cooling water
  Biodegradable liquids
Condensate water from compressed air installations
  Contaminated mine or quarry water
Liquid wastes or wash waters other than domestic sewage

Larger sites are often governed by the Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) regulations, these regulations will often demand online measurement of many of the key parameters. This legislation has recently been reinforced by the application of Operator and Pollution Risk Appraisal (OPRA) and Operator Monitoring Assessment (OMA) to discharges to water.

Considerable savings can be made by the use of reliable, accurate instrumentation and analysers both in terms of direct costs including manpower, utilities and chemicals and the indirect costs of failing to meet discharge consent targets such as courts cost and bad publicity.
